OMG BW'08!

So things have been pretty hectic here lately. I've been doing lots of things (and running out of money too lol I don't get paid enough!).

Last week was Nicole's (Jason's wife) birthday week. They had planned events for like every day during birthday week, so the aforementioned boredom that I spoke of had subsided. Although, birthday week was fun and I didn't have to think of things to do, I was exhausted! I had to rush out of work most of the week and shower and then be somewhere almost immediately afterwards! I wasn't cut out for it! The events of birthday week were as follows:

Thursday, July 3rd (Happy B-day, Aunt Cin!) - Dinner at Jason and Nicole's apartment to celebrate the kick-off of birthday week! We had some beer and she made a wonderful potato dish and Jason made some asparagus, which I love now! I can't believe I hated asparagus for so long! It's delicious! The dessert was also very good. It was some truffle pudding delight treat!

Friday, July 4th (Happy Freedom, USA! yeah, right!) - I had the 4th off of work, so Kristen (carniore keeper) and I planned a get together that was to take place at her house (She's 23 and has a mortgage!). She really wanted to make it a Slip 'N Slide party so we traveled to a bunch of stores in the Granbury, TX area looking for them. Wal-mart, Target, Toy 'R Us, CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, and Big Lots all did not have them! So, we went to Lowes (Home Improvement Warehouse, duh!) and bought a roll of sheet plastic and created our own racing slip 'n slide course. It worked perfectly! The night was fun. I drank some beers and spent the night at Kristen's. Kristen's great dane, Ed, spent the night on the couch with me and he is a terrible cuddler! He takes up all the space! I also made the awesome fresh orange cake for this party. YUM!

Saturday, July 5th - I worked and then went with Kristen (intern) and Ashley (my boss) to Kristen's (carnivore keeper) house. There I made red velvet cupcakes with white chocolate cream cheese frosting for Nicole's b-day party that would take place the next night, also at Kristen's house. The cupcakes were delicious and so was the home-made pizza that we made that night!

Sunday, July 6th - On this night we had a party for Nicole at Kristen's house and set up the slide 'n slide again. The theme of the night was 80's night. I passed out way early at around 11:00 while everybody else was up past 2:00 am. I had to work the next day!

Monday, July 7th - This was Nicole's real birthday (When you have a birthday week, you have to have the real birthday placed in the middle of the week). We went into Dallas (omg longest drive EVER for dinner!) to Maggiano's Little Italy. While I was expecting a fancy, expensive restaurant I was surprised. It was fancy, but the portions were HUMONGOUS, so you could easily split a $15.00 entree between two people, so it actually ends up being cheaper than the Olive Garden!

Tuesday, July 8th - This day we went to Six Flags Over Texas. Ashley and I met up with Nicole, Jason, Craig, Joe, and Pam (Nicole's BFF from back in Nashville) at around 7 pm. The crowds were not big, so we had high hopes of being able to ride a lot of rides. However, after one ride the sky turned crazy and it stormed for about a half hour. That sounds good, though because there should have been about 2 good hours left. But, no Six Flags kept things closed for another 45 minutes! UGH! So we had about an hour of riding time left when everything finally opened back up.

Wednesday, July 9th - Resting day, thank god!

Thursday, July 8th - Nicole, Jason, Pam, and I drove down to New Braunfels, TX (about a 4 hour drive) to go to the "World's Best Waterpark" (according to the Travel Channel), Schlitterbahn! When we got there we saw TONS of people, all of them white trash! It was so crowded, there were long lines for everything, and there some nastyass people in gross swimsuits. At about 3 oclock (we got there at around 11:30 am) the power went out and we had to ride a shuttle back to the other side of the park to get to our locker and car. However, there were TONS of people also trying to catch the shuttle. It was a mess! I already thinking of the letter or e-mail I would be writing to Schlitterbahn if rainchecks or refunds weren't going to be offered ("...I realize weather and power malfunctions are things that are out of your control, but customer service is always in your control!..." <-- that was the hightlight of my potential letter). However, by the time we reached the other side of the park, the power was back on and the rides were running shortly afterwards. Luckily, a large amount of the people left and made the lines shorter. Overall, Schlitterbahn is highly overrated but still a fun park that is cool because it uses natural water that comes from the adjacent Comal River (which is 72 degress year-round, FYI) and uses tube chutes similar to the ones at Dover Lake Waterpark. I like the tube chutes because they mix together the fun parts of water slides and lazy rivers into one longer, more fun ride.

That was the end of birthday week. Nothing exciting has happened since then, except I found a partially eaten possum body in the wolf pen and had to pick it up and place it in a bag for the vets to inspect. It smelled awful! Maybe I will be able to update or more things that happened since birthday week when my fingers are done cramping up from all this typing!

Ciao!

I do miss home and everyone at home but I really really like it here. I hang out with my boss all the time outside of work. We get a long really well. I also like hanging out with the carnivore keeper, Kristen, who was just an intern here in the spring, and Jason, the cheetah keeper, and his wife, Nicole. On my last day off, I went to work with Jason in the morning to see what he does. We have like 20 something cheetahs and they eat like 100 pounds of meat every day. That's a big difference from my little ocelot who takes a week to eat a five-pound package of meat. Anyways, I got to meet all the cheetahs and I even got to pet two of them. Jason hand-raised them a couple of years ago when he was an intern here. The picture is one of the cheetahs that I pet. I love large cats! They are definitely my favorite animals. Jason's wife Nicole is so funny. They got married four months ago and moved down here so Jason could have his dream job. Because she moved for him, she made him promise to give her the best "Birthday Week" ever. "Birthday Week" kicks off on Thursday! We are all going to go to Six Flags. I love roller coasters!
Also, on Wednesday I am going to go with Jason to pick up a maned wolf in Houston. We are making the drive at night, so we will not get back here in Glen Rose until 4 or 5 am the next morning. It should be fun. I've never driven anywhere with a wolf (in a crate, not loose lol...) in the back seat.
Nick the eclectus parrot no longer likes me. He just makes loud annoying noises and occasionaly bites my shoulder instead of sitting on it. However, Jack, the beautiful cockatoo, lets me massage him now. He is such a good bird. We had to take Jack and Nick down to the clinic last week to get physicals. They were both such good boys. They didn't bite or anything. They had to get put under. Haha Jack was so funny he was coming out of it. He was put back in the crate and he just kept falling over into the walls and getting back up and stumbling. He looked so drunk haha.
I saw two movies this weekend! Two GOOD movies! On Friday night we went to see Wall-E! I give it the best grade ever! It was so emotional and made my heart hurt badly. After the movie, Kristen was driving home and her car's hood flew up backwards and smashed into her windshield and cracked it so much! It was so weird! All of a sudden, the road was black, I had no idea what was going on. On Saturday night we saw Wanted, which was also very good but in a different way than Wall-E was. There was a double murder in the next town over! How scary! Two women were found in a SUV with gunshot wounds in their heads. Yikes!
Haha! Everybody down here says that they are "Fixin'" to do things. So weird!

New Day, New Blog...

No, we do not have tigers at Fossi Rim. That picture was taken at the Fort Worth Zoo. We went to the zoo on wednesday, because we never all get the same days off. So we took that opportunity and made the best of a terribly humid, terribly crowded summer day at the zoo.
The zoo exhibits were pretty nice. Some of them were so small that I could not believe and some of the animals were super fat as if they were being overfed or something. Overall, however, the zoo had a really nice feel to it. A lot of animals that I had never seen before as well were at this zoo like jaguars, Indian rhinos, and the great mythical looking ibex. I would definitely go back there if I had the chance.
Before the zoo, there a giraffe knockdown here at the park. A knockdown is basically what they call if when they need to dart an animal so that it is immobilized. They needed to trim the hooves of one of the female giraffes and in order to do this they needed to knock her down. It was really cool to see how all this worked. It was very carefully planned and many people had roles so that it went as quickly as possible. They only want the animals to be under for as least time as possible, because the longer the animals are under, the more things can go wrong. I posted some pictures of this event over at my Flickr photo site. There are pictures from the zoo as well. The knockdown pictures can be found with the fossil rim pictures.
I'm really having a good time down here. Despite the wretched heat, I am enjoying my time and learning a lot of things. I like going to work although the goats are constantly getting on my nerves. It is nice being up early all the time. I hate sleeping in and letting the day go by.
See ya later, I'm hungry!

it's been a while...

Well, it has been a month since a left home and I’ve already gotten into the full swing of things down here. The morning routine at work is already burned into my brain from doing it so many times already and the animals are starting to get used to me I think. For example, Nick the eclectus parrot, has started bonding with me and he will sit on my shoulder regurgitate his food to me. It’s gross but cute at the same time. I’ve also gotten relatively used to the heat here. It’s never below 90 degrees during the day.
Gas is so expensive. If it were less expensive I would be more apt to do exciting things on my days off. I would like to check out San Antonio, Austin, and Houston, but the gas is too much and I don’t share days off with anyone else, so I would have to go alone. Plus, after the drive here I don’t want to spend lots of time in the car until the drive home. I’ve already gone into Arlington to go to Six Flags Over Texas twice. There are some fun roller coasters there but it’s no CP! I want to go to Sea World, Schlitterbahn Water Park, and the Six Flags in San Antonio before the summer is over! I went into Fort Worth the other night for dinner to celebrate my boss’s birthday with the cheetah keeper and his wife. It was a fun time and I went to P.F. Chang’s for the first time. It was good but too expensive. They took Ashley, my boss, to get her makeup done at some store in the mall. So, I went to a candy store there and I started putting some candy in a bag. It ended up being 20 bucks! I had no idea I grabbed so much. That was a disappointment. So now I have tons of candy to last me the rest of the week. I can’t wait to get Type II Diabetes!!!! So the cheetah keeper’s wife loves going to amusement parks so they mentioned maybe going to Schlitterbahn and the other Six Flags sometime this summer. For those of you who don’t know, Schlitterbahn is always on the Travel Channel as the Best Water Park in the country! I can’t wait to go!
Today I went to the Black Rhino Barn for the first time. Now, before you say “Kyle I already saw you with a Rhino!”, realize that we have White and Black rhinos here. I already saw the White rhinos. The Black rhinos are so much cooler because they have a prehensile lip which allows them to grab things! It’s like a really smaller version of an elephant’s truck. They keep the Black rhinos in a section called the IMA, which stands for Intensive Management Area. Here they keep animals that are involved in intensive breeding programs. The public cannot access this area without being on a special tour. There are also Maned, Red, and Mexican Gray wolves in this area as well as coatis, cheetahs, and Attwater’s Prairie chicken.
I get really bored here sometimes because there is not much to do. I take full advantage of my netflix subscription. I am now caught up in LOST, WEEDS, and now I started watching the X-files, to get ready for the new movie in July! Speaking of movies, the new HULK movie comes out tomorrow! I wanted to go at midnight but the nearest theater is 25 minutes away and I wouldn't be home until SO LATE.
Soon, Yeumee will be back in Texas to work at the Fort Worth Zoo and I can’t wait to go visit her there. Hopefully she will be able to get me behind the scenes at the elephant exhibit because she will be doing research with them.
Oh my god, I cannot believe I totally forgot the most important and frightening update of all! I found a scorpion in my bedroom! It was small but still scary! I captured it and released it outside thank god!
The picture up top is my ocelot, by the way. And he was lookin’ to get some dead quail.

it's hot

So it has been SO HOT for the past week! I cannot even believe how quickly it has gotten so hot. It’s been consistently in the high 90’s for the past week and it is only May. I do not even wanna know what it’s going to be like in July! It usually cools down to a pretty nice temperature at night. The past couple nights we have done some cool things. On Thursday night we went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was just OK. The best part was that the ticket to go see the movie was only $4.25! I have never seen movies regularly priced this cheap unless they were old movies! I was so excited! Then last night we went to swim in the river again and found some more real dinosaur footprints. That was exciting. I love swimming in natural water! Tonight we went on a drive throughout the park feeding any animals that wanted to be fed. My favorites are the giraffes and the bongos. The bongos are so cool! Then we made a detour to the Rhino barn to check up on Marvin, Duma, and Edith, who just arrived here at Fossil Rim. That’s me and Edith up top.
Well Yeumee will be leaving here next week already which sucks because we get along quite easily. However, it is nice to know that I do know an Australian so if I ever need a place to stay there or a tour guide I will know who to call. A new rhino intern arrived here today and she seems pretty cool. I really do not have much to say, just that it’s hot...

fossil rim

So I have started work and it’s been pretty good. For work, I need to be up at around 7:15 to be at work around 8 am. On Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays I need to be at the animal care meetings up at the admin building. The meetings are usually around 15-20 minutes. After the meeting, we (Ashley and I) head up to the Children’s Animal Center. Our daily routine consists of preparing daily diets for all the animals, hosing down the barn and outdoor patio, and squeegeeing the hosed down portions. It all takes around 2 hours to complete. After all that stuff is done, we do random projects that need to be completed. For example, Saturday and Sunday we cleared out under the hay rack of the old hay (and poop and pee) that has collected since January. All the old hay (and poop and pee) had to be taken down to compost in our Mitsubishi vehicle (it took about 5 loads). It takes about ten minutes to get anywhere here. So, that was a major project in itself.
Tomorrow is my first day of being alone at the barn and being “in charge” of the area. I feel prepared though. There really isn’t much to the job once you learn everything. My favorite animals that I take care of are the wolves. My new pictures are in a new album that I have placed up on the site. Yesterday I went swimming in a river down at Dinosaur Valley State Park where they have real dinosaur prints preserved in the riverbed and tonight we made s’mores near the fire at the camps up near the overlook. Overall, I am having a good time. There really is not much to do here. The closest stores are ten minutes and those don’t have much. To get anything good you have to drive about 25 minutes. I sometimes get kind of bored in the evening but then I just watch a movie on my laptop.
This place is huge though! The scenic drive through the park is 9.5 miles long and takes about 2.5 hours. There are some staff shortcuts, but it takes pretty long to drive around inside there.

finally here

So, on Monday morning I awoke early to shower and arrive at Alexander Chevrolet in Dickson, TN right when they opened so that I could get fixed up right away and get back on the road. I drove my wobbly car about 15 miles from the hotel I was staying at to get to Dickson. When I arrived, the nice Southern man told me to drive my car right up and they would get me looked at right away. I took my laptop into the customer lounge and waited for about an hour. He came back and told me that I “did a real number on my car when I went off the road...” Apparently, my wheel was bent, my hub was bent, and I needed a new tire. Not only was gonna be expensive (about 500 dollars!), but they did not have any hubs in stock and would not have the part until the following morning at around 10:30. He advised that I get a hotel room and told me that I should be out of there by noon the following day.
So, I got a hotel room at the Motel 6 in Dickson. This hotel was half as expensive as the Best Western in Kingston Springs and the wireless internet was WAY faster. I immediately went back to sleep and did not wake back up until 1:30. After that I spent a lot of time browsing the web and I watched a movie, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. It was very good and I recommend it truly! I decided to then leave the room at about 4 and try to walk around and find something to eat. This area sucked. I walked around and crossed over the highway and I did not find anything appealing. This place was not made for pedestrians and was not easy to get around because there were no sidewalks! I finally settled and ate breakfast for dinner at Cracker Barrel. I then spent the rest of the evening watching another movie, Into the Wild. This movie was long and boring but still kind of good. I had read the book previously and I thought it was a good adaptation. Then I went to bed. What a boring and stupid, long day.
The next day, I checked out of the hotel and went to see how my car was doing at 10:45 am. They said the truck had not arrived and that when it did, my car would be ready very soon. So, I sat in the waiting room with some native Tennesseans and listened to some interesting conversations for about an hour. Then I asked if my car was almost done and he said yes. So, I waited another half hour to realize that at noon, everyone went on lunch with my car half-finished. Finally, it was done at 1:30, an hour and a half later than what they estimated. I jumped on the highway immediately. The remaining ten hours were long and boring, but the weather kept up nicely, which was good. When I was 45 minutes from my destination, a really bad storm started. There was tons of lightning and rain. The radio went silent and a weather warning came on and I was so scared that there was going to be tornados. I finally got here around 11:50 pm, and I met my roomie. Her name is Yeumee (sp?) and she is a vet intern from Australia. She will be here for the next 3 weeks. After that, she will be going to the Fort Worth Zoo and then I will get a new roommate for 6 more weeks.
I took some photos of my livings quarters, which can be found on my albums page. The goats in the photos are my next door neighbors. Now I need to go to the admin building to fill out some paperwork. See ya soon!

Good Start

Ok, so I will start with the most obvious thing to talk about. About an hour and a half into my drive, I am driving (kind of swiftly) down I-71 near Mansfield, OH. So far, the whole drive had been RAIN RAIN RAIN. So, the roads were kind of slick. I was just chillin’ and listenin’ to some jams when all of a sudden I started hydroplaning on a large puddle of water! So, I tried to keep control of my car and to gradually slow down, but that did nothing. I twirled around and started moving backwards on the shoulder! This all probably happened way faster than I remember, but it felt like I was moving backwards for a long time! My car, named Jennifer, then whacked itself into the cement wall (it was on a bridge!!!) and scraped along it until the end. Then, I did another 180 and landed in the mud in the grass section between the north and south freeways. I was so angry! I three my phone and then started yelling and then I called my mom, and I realized I was ok and that my car wasn’t really smashed up at all. It could have been a lot worse. I saw my gas tank door was missing and I went in search of it in the highway grass, all while it was pouring rain. I was actually able to drive my car out of the ditch (thank god!!!) and get back on the road.
I arrived at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom to buy my Six Flags pass at around 3:30 and I stayed there for about an hour. I rode a couple roller coasters. On each of those coasters I rode, I was the only person on the train. It was wet and rainy and cold, and I left unhappy! I, once again, rejoined the road, rejuvenated and refreshed. It was about three hours later, after passing through Nashville, that two people, within 15 minutes of each other, flagged me to tell me that the back end of my car was wobbling. I freaked out, pictured my back axel and wheels falling off and me dying, and pulled over and got a room at the Best Western in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. I will be taking my car into the Chevy Dealership tomorrow to get looked at and hopefully it will not put me too far behind schedule. I was angry but then I realized it could be worse and that I was pretty lucky. Besides, I love Tennessee and I’m glad I’m spending extra time here!
